What I mean when I say “personal BS”
I think it is important in any conversation to establish a common language and understanding of words and terms used in that relationship. That is why I put together this short blog about BS or Belief Systems following an email I received.
“Please explain what you mean when you say personal Belief Systems.”
Frist thank you for asking I love questions.
A personal belief is something you (or someone else) hold to be truth. This belief may be based on scientific facts, personal experience, or what a person has heard from others (peers, parents, teachers, etc.). It can be based on what a person wants to think is true because it is convenient or makes them feel better. A personal belief is not necessarily the same as the belief commonly held by the majority.

This belief may be based on scientific facts, personal experience, what a person has heard from others (peers, parents, teachers, etc.), or what a person wants to think is true because it is convenient or makes them feel better. A personal belief is not necessarily the same as the belief commonly held by the majority however it can be shared my one or more persons. Like the idea that the world was flat or that only some people get to experience real success.
Sometimes a person or even a community will choose to hold onto a personal belief system long after being provided with evidence or experiences to the contrary of its truth.
Your ‘’Personal Belief Systems’’ can sometimes act as information masquerading as truth.
And when we are willing to clean out the clutter in your subconscious mind and challenge our long stand BS growth happens.
What you will notice is much of my Blog, and Radio show is about BS (Belief Systems). Topics that I will continue to talk about in the future will be:
- Taking and inventory of your BS
- Challenging your Personal Belief Systems
- Figuring out if you BS is working for you or against you
- Building a better BS
What should I do with my current Belief Systems
The good news is that we can recreate our BS (Beliefs Systems) at any point in time we just have to make the intentional effort. In a nutshell that is what coaching is. Seeing and changing our personal belief systems that produce a life at a higher level to begin living life with success.
The only way I know to shift the beliefs that you have about yourself and to build a stronger identity is to cast a vote for that identity with many, tiny actions.
Let’s say you want to become the type of person who never misses a workout. (If you believed that about yourself, how much easier would it be to get in shape?) Every time you choose to do a workout — even if it’s only 5 minutes — you’re casting a vote for this new identity in your mind. Every action is a vote for the type of person you want to become. My actions more votes. Note I did not say bigger actions I said more.
This is why I advocate starting with incredibly small actions (small votes still count!) and building consistency.
So as we journey together stay fluid in your thinking and beliefs. Be open to change and growth.
